Things you need to know

There is no rule that says you must complete the 3 peaks in 24 hours. Peaks can be climbed over days, weeks or years. Trying to do this in 24 hours leads to loss of enjoyment and a higher risk of accidents.

During peak times in summer, there are up to 2000 people each weekend ascend Ben Nevis. Similar numbers ascend Snowdon but numbers are less on Scafell Pike. Try to walk midweek if possible and also try not to drive through or disturb villagers during the night. Plan your walk to fit daytime if possible.

The effort required to complete the National 3 Peaks cannot be under estimated. The lack of proper sleep, food and comfort does take its toll on people of all ages. In times of snow the danger of overhangs, whiteouts and false ledges can all prove fatal if you are ill prepared. Carry and know how to use essential equipment. In winter an ice axe and crampons are considered essential.

The tourist path is used for the Ben Nevis annual race, which usually takes place on the first Saturday in September. The Lochaber Mountain Rescue Team supervises it.
